History

The Cultural Heritage Administration selected the Baekje Historic Areas as a candidate for nomination for inscription on the World Heritage List in 2011, combining the Gongju and Buyeo Historic Sites with the Iksan Historic Areas from the Tentative List. Subsequently, the Cultural Heritage Administration completed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation for the nomination with the relevant local governments in Chungcheongnam-do, Jeollanam-do, Gongju, Buyeo and Iksan.

The Baekje Historic Areas Nomination Office was established in May 2012 in order to integrate and coordinate the opinions and activities of relevant parties.
The Baekje Historic Areas Nomination Office was replaced by the Baekje Historic Areas Conservation and Management Foundation in September 2014 to serve as an integrated conservation management institution. Then, the foundation was replaced again by Baekje World Heritage Center in January 2016. The Baekje World Heritage Center takes the form of an incorporated body founded with joint investment from Chuncheongnam-do province, Jeollabuk-do province, Gongju city, Buyeo county, and Iksan city.
