Within the Chungcheongnam-do provincial government, the unit responsible for affairs related to the Baekje Historic Areas is the Cultural Heritage Department under the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau. The Cultural Heritage Department is divided into three teams with one each in charge of cultural heritage policy, cultural heritage management and cultural area development. Major responsibilities fall on the Cultural Heritage Policy Team, including the following:

  • Establishing cultural heritage protection policies and assuming responsibility for general policy affairs
  • Managing cultural heritage protection areas and other non-designated heritage sites
  • Managing affairs related to inscription on the World Heritage List
  • Managing heritage-related events
  • Ensuring the safety of the heritage and preventing damages from natural disasters
  • Addressing heritage-related acts and ordinances
  • Executing and managing the budget for heritage maintenance

Alongside the above-mentioned duties, the departments of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau are responsible for expanding heritage-related facilities, nurturing the culture industry, managing cultural tourism marketing, developing cultural contents, and making indirect contributions to the promotion of culture and tourism in Gongju and Buyeo.

Jeollabuk-do

Within the Jeollabuk-do provincial government, the responsible unit for affairs related to the Baekje Historic Areas is the Culture and Art Department of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau. The Culture and Arts Department is divided into five teams, with one each in charge of jobs in the culture sector, art and performance, religion, cultural contents, and cultural heritage and ancient cities. Major responsibilities fall on the Cultural Heritage and Ancient Cities Team, including the following:

  • Establishing cultural heritage conservation, management and utilization plans
  • Managing affairs related to the Special Act on the Preservation and Promotion of Ancient Cities
  • Establishing related disaster-prevention systems
  • Managing adjustments to the status of cultural heritage and the improvement of heritage-related ordinances
  • Managing affairs related to the excavation, designation, termination of designation and alteration in the current status of given cultural heritage
  • Managing related repair and maintenance
