    Introduction

    Iksan is the site of the story of prince Seodong, who created the song of Seodong in an effort to win the heart of Silla’s Royal princess Seonhwa and later rose to become the 30th ruler of the Baekje Kingdom. Iksan was the birthplace of prince Seodong, served as the capital of Mahan and was also the secondary capital of Baekje during the later period of the kingdom. The festival began as the Mahan Folklore Festival in 1969 and was transformed into the Iksan Seodong Festival in 2004. The festival offers an opportunity to learn about the everlasting love between prince Seodong of Baekje and princess Seonhwa of Silla as it transcended boundaries of time and nationality.

    Introduction

    The Buyeo Seodong Lotus Festival has been gaining nationwide popularity and was singled out as a promising festival by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The festival is centered around the Seodong park, which includes Gungnamji pond, the first man-made pond in Korea. Areas in and around Gungnamji pond, measuring 380,000 square meters, are planted with approximately 50 varieties of lotus, such as red lotus, white lotus and water lily.

    The festival provides an opportunity to enjoy the love story of prince Seondong (Baekje’s 30th monarch King Mu) and princess Seonhw (the third daughter King Jinpyeong of Silla) amid a colorful array of lotus blossoms, the natural environment and the time-honored culture and history of Baekje.
